Fortnightly Thread 22/09

Yep, the quarterly fortnightly has returned, and only about a month later than I’d planned. This is the segment where I round up all the news that you already new as its been reported everywhere already, into one handy post of short links, and shorter insight! Awesome, lets begin:

1) Zazzle announced Flickr integration. I can now get all my bad photos on shirts with just a few clicks, nice idea Zazzle - Learn More

They also just underwent a face lift, again best covered by Custom T-shirt talk - read more
both via (Custom T-shirt Talk)

2) In slightly less convincing news, Cafepress announced custom yard signs?!?! I guess I have to be American to understand this assortment addition, which I’m not, so I don’t. But there you go - read more

again via (Custom T-shirt Talk)

3) My current project Open Logo Project has gone crazy, in a good way (400 entries this week alone). Which is why its a little quiet round here, I’m planning to write a much longer post about my experiences actually getting to run, rather than talk about Design Contests soon. But i’m trying to blog three times a day over there, so if you get bored come and keep me company - to the olp batman!

4) Anyone know what happened to Stagr? It seems to have changed business model away from custom clothing, a little surprising as they had a sweet designer flash tool.

5) Dirty Microbe goes bad, everyone gets pissed, rants alot, avoid - read more

(via T-shirt Island)

6) La Fraise doubles colour options, now allowing 8 colour designs! They’ve also printed some sweet retro game goodness recently, the Bubble Bobble shirt being my favourite. I lost two many hours fighting with my younger brother who should get to grab the (k) bubble even though both of you could, at best, spell the word “cbghsk” which would get you nowhere. I digress, anyway its one my favourite games of all time. LaFraise also now sells in the US

7) This leads my to Design By Humans. Basically they’re kicking ass. Its not hard to see from looking at their designs where this contest model is going. I’m still not sold on this daily thing, and its still not as sweet a deal as winning Threadless but come on, you don’t have to battle with 1000s of others yet, and you get to make awesome designs, the printing options available there are second to none. What i’m most suprised about it is how brilliantly the DBH community is incorporating them. Check out this shirt for example:

I like the way they use complex, large layered prints. Sometimes you don’t want to be entertained, or made to “ah’”, this is art to the tnth degree. But they push the envelope further by embroidering one little guy on the back of the shirt, check out his fraying rope:

Lets plenty more great shirts, like these using glow in darks, acrylics, accents and tonnes of other stuff I don’t understand:

Use this code for 15% off FUGSSU - ends 28th

8) Spreadshirt for books launches, its called Createspace Probably more on it later, I think the implications are pretty huge.

9) Karmaloop organizes $3000 dollar tshirt design contest

10) The “why scientists, why” award goes to the technology to create images only visible on cameras. Useful for that “stop taking photos of me, you asshole!” tshirt you always wanted ;)

I guess thats all! Thanks for reading.

11) Interesting tutorial on how to bleach designs on shirts, the effects look incredible. You can see the tutorial here

12) Blog your favourite Spreadshirt marketplace design, get it free in a new incentive from the Marketplace team. More details will appear on Spreadblog next week

Introducing the Fortnightly Thread

Fortnightly Thread

It feels like I’ve stolen that name, but I can’t remember where from. Anyway a new regular feature for HipHipUK will be the fortnightly industry roundup, or “Fortnightly Thread”. Here I’ll collect the most interesting things I’ve seen over the past two weeks and if I have anything interesting to say (yeah right), my opinion on them. I used to do this sort of thing occasionally for Spreadshirt, but makes more sense to publish it here as HipHipUK has been a bit quiet of late.

Lets begin:
